The Specs

  • CPU Processing Power.
    • Features the previously announced “Cell Processor”
    • The clock speed will run a 3.2GHz. PS3_01
    • It will have 256MB of XDR main RAM at 3.2GHz.
      • The system bandwidth of the main ram will be 25.6GB/s.
    • There will be an additional 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700MHz.
      • The VRAM bandwidth will be 22.4GB/s.
  • Graphical processing Power.
    • Sony will use Nvidia technology in their graphics chip dubbed “The Reality Synthesizer” or RSX for short.
    • The GPU will handle 128bit pixel precision and 1080p resolution.
    • It will have 512MB of graphics rendering memory.
    • It will contain over 300 million transistors which is larger than any other commercially available processor.
      • i.e. It’s more powerful than 2 GeForce6800 Ultra video cards.
  • Supported Media:
    • Will use Blu-ray discs as it’s media format.
      • Discs can hold six times as much data as current-generation DVD’s

    • There will also be slots for Memory Stick Duo and compact flash memory. PS3_02
    • There will be a slot for a removable 2.5-inch hard drive.
  • The PS3 will have extensive multimedia features.
    • Video chat which will involve the use of the next generation EyeToy camera.
      • This new camera will be wireless and produce images in high definition, but will not come with the PS3.
    • Internet access.
    • Digital Photo Viewing.
    • Digital Audio and Video.
    • 5.1 Dolby DTS.
    • Two HDMI HD outputs allowing for two side by side HDTV’s to project video in a 32:9 extra widescreen format or for extended game display.
  • Will support seven Bluetooth controllers with an estimated 24 hours of play before needing recharged.
  • There are six USB slots (Four in front, two in back).
  • The PS3 will also have WiFi connectivity to the PSP for use as a remote screen or controller.
  • Overall, the PS3 has some seriously impressive specs. It all could add up to another dominating Sony console if they live up to the promises.
