- A 31-year old employee of a local retailer in the Washington DC area has been sentenced to 8 months by a US District Court for selling “Super Xboxes”.
- Hitesh Patel will get 4 months in jail followed by 4 months of house arrest.
- Patel managed a local retail store called Pandora’s Cube.
- He also served as the technician for all three of the local stores.
- Patel also sold “Super Xboxes” on the side for $500.
- These featured larger hard drives and the ability to play illegally copied games.
- Some units came with several games preloaded.
- President of the Entertainment Software Association applauded the decision by saying: “Sentences of this magnitude send a strong message to the pirate community that intellectual property theft is a serious crime with serious consequences.”
- The illegal Xbox’s were found in a raid by federal authorities on December 1st.
- Three more employees of the stores have sentencing trials next month.
