Game Story

  • One of the strongest aspects of GUN is its story.
  • It's a very mature and violent look into the old west.
  • GUN is set in the late 1800’s in and around the town of Dodge City Kansas.
  • You play as Colton White (called Colt for most of the game), a gunslinger who has been raised by his father Ned. Gun_01
  • Early on, a riverboat that Colt and Ned are on, is attacked by a group of apaches lead by a mysterious preacher, killing everyone on board.
  • Thanks to some help from Ned, Colt is able to escape but learns that Ned is not his real father right before Ned gets killed.
  • Being the only survivor, Colt heads to Dodge City to find some answers and seek revenge against those who killed the man he knew as father.
  • From here the story grows, and does a good job of staying interesting and integrating with the gameplay.

Gameplay

  • The gameplay in Gun tries to be an open ended adventure through the old west allowing for the gamer to choose their own path through side missions and the main story.
  • Unfortunately this freedom felt a little contained and forced with some of the side missions being just plain boring.
    • There are only two cities in the game Dodge, and Empire.
    • In between are some old mines, a lake, railroad tracks, and a few other areas that you will find yourself crossing or exploring through the side missions.
    • Most of the map though is surrounded by either impossible to pass mountains or invisible walls, limiting you to a pretty small area.
    • The total land area also doesn’t feel that large, so it won’t take long to get used to the lay of the land.
  • As the main missions progress, you will be told to meet or talk to a person somewhere on the world map.
    • From there the game will cut to a short story sequence that will set up the following mission.Gun_02
    • You’ll find that many missions will be made up of several varying goals; each can be separated by its own short story sequence.
      • For example one early mission has you protecting a stagecoach from Indians on horseback.
      • Along the path, the wheel falls off the stagecoach and you’ll have to protect it while the driver fixes it.
      • When the wagon is repaired you will hop onto the roof and try to blast away an approaching Indians as you make it to your destination.
  • The area of gameplay where the game shines, is the actual gun fighting.
  • For most of the game though, you’ll probably use either rifles or shotguns from a third person perspective, unless you are in “Quickdraw” mode.
    • Quickdraw is one of the games best gameplay features.
    • You build up Quickdraw time by racking up headshots, dismemberment shots, and shooting people off horses.
    • Using “Quickdraw” slows down time and puts you into a first person perspective with your pistol.
    • This gives your more time to aim and hit fast moving targets.
    • You can also use the left stick for quick targeting, allowing Colt to get out of some hairy situations.
    • It’s a fun feature, but once you get used to it can make the game a little easy on its normal setting.
  • Other weapons may be used but most are rarely needed or feel like some part of the gameplay was left out.
    • Melee weapons are never required.
    • Bows are used primarily for hunting missions and only one other main mission.
    • Pistols are your first weapons, but after getting a rifle that has zoom, pistols are only used with the Quickdraw.
    • A scalping knife can be bought to scalp people, but other than a poorly animated action sequence it serves no other gameplay purpose.
  • Between the main story missions you have the option of exploring the land to find gold or partake in one of the game’s many side missions. Gun_03
    • Pony Express
    • Bounty
    • Poker
    • Deputy
    • Federal Marshal
    • Ranch Hand
    • Hunting
  • The side missions will earn you money as well as increase your character’s stats such as:
    • Gunhand
    • Quickdraw
    • Melee
    • Horse
    • Health
      • Quickdraw and Health tend to be the only ones that make any kind of difference.
      • If it wasn’t for an achievement to completely max out your character, you probably wouldn’t want to play all the side missions.
  • Throughout the game, Colt will receive new weapons in several different categories.
    • Pistols
    • Rifles
    • Shotguns
    • Melee
    • Thrown Gun_04
    • Bows
    • Sniping
  • You can always stop at a county store to buy a few upgrades.
    • Faster reloading of certain types of weapons.
    • Modifications to weapons to produce more power.
    • Additional slots for your health.
    • More health for your horse
  • Another well done feature is the horseback riding.
    • Galloping across the countryside is smooth and fun and is imperative for crossing some of the expanse of land between Dodge and Empire.
    • Shooting from on your horse is also smooth and easy.
