Nintendo changes the name of their Next Gen console. - Nintendo apparently didn’t like marketing possibilities of the “Revolution” brand name so they chose a better one according to them: The Wii.
- At first glance you might not understand even how to pronounce Wii.
- Is it Wi as in Wi-Fi?
- Is it W(2)? Some sort of sequel? I don’t remember the Wi?
- No the correct answer is Wii as in “we”, or oui, if you’re French.
- Nintendo claims that the “…‘Revolution' expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that separates game players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games...and each other.”
- Obviously Nintendo is going to focus heavily on the play on words in their marketing campaign.
- Nintendo also points out that each “i” symbolizes the Wii’s unique wireless controller as well as the image of people gathering to play.
- Industry experts are mixed on the name change
- Michael Gartenberg, vice president of Jupiter Research says “Looks like a good solid name for Nintendo. [But] the key is making sure they follow up with a strong launch campaign to evangelize the new brand and help drive the message forward.
- Another anonymous analyst said: “Now they have a stupid-sounding manufactured name that probably wouldn't have tested well with English speakers if they'd bothered doing any market research. And they're going to try to use it to replace an evocative, well-accepted name that people have been using for well over a year. Bad, stupid move."

- While some experts may be giving Nintendo the benefit of the doubt, an overwhelming majority of the fan base is not.
- Many message boards are filled with derogatory and flaming posts towards the new name.
- However, the one thing that all complainers still had in common, was that if they were planning on buying one before, the name change doesn’t change that.
- Here’s hoping that the Nintendo Wii will be as revolutionary as it was once promised to be.
