Mr. Pants is single player only.
I thought it was a pick up and play puzzle game with little to no instruction needed.
The game play is different from any other puzzle game I’ve played in that you must fill in the blanks to complete the puzzle.
The player is given a limited number of blocks to clear the puzzle.
The blocks displayed along the right column of the screen and give the player a two deep history of what shapes and colors are coming up.
I liked having an idea of what was coming up especially in cases where there were obvious pieces I needed and I could see they were on their way.
The blocks are squares, L-shaped, dots, straight lines and small elbows.
All similar to the Tetris shapes.
Each block has a particular location and position in order to clear the puzzle.
However, when I was playing I found I could clear the puzzle even though I didn’t place the pieces where they were expected to be placed.
The goal of the game is to complete rectangles or squares of a color larger than two blocks by two blocks.
Blocks must be placed on open space or can overlap blocks of a different color.
You cannot place like colors on top of one another.
Blocks can be rotated and moved all around the screen but they must be placed in a certain amount of time or they will stay where they are when time runs out.
Unless they are on a like color and then the puzzle is automatically failed.
The time limit on placing the blocks can be annoying at times.
It is e
specially aggravating when you're contemplating the position of a piece and it’s on a like color and the puzzle is automatically failed.
After your 4
th
attempt to complete the puzzle Helpo (which resembles a light bulb with stick arms and legs) becomes available to help you complete the puzzle.
Helpo will show you the placement of one piece of the puzzle after that he disappears and leaves the rest of the puzzle for you to solve.
Helpo sleeps until you select the select button, then he will spring into action.
Helpo comes in handy as your working through different levels as puzzles become more difficult.
Graphics
Mr. Pants graphics consist of crudely drawn cartoons.
Looks like the product of kindergartners gone wild.
All graphics contain a heavy underpants motif with the many themed backgrounds.
Surreal Pants
Trowel Pants
BaaBaa Pants
Elepants

J
Bright and vibrant colors are used and even bleed over the lines to further the child like coloring affect.
At the end of each puzzle with success or failure different graphics litter the screen
Mice
Underpants
Houses
Sound
Mr. Pants makes exclamations like “Super” and “Oh no, not more!” when playing through puzzles and scrolling through game modes.
Farm animal among other animal noises are released when rectangles have been completed in the puzzle.
Zany theme music is accompanied by Mr. Pants humming or singing along.
The sound adds humor to gameplay but I found it annoying and played most of the game with the sound turned all the way down.
Captivation
Mr. Pants is easy to learn and easy to pick up and play.
The increasing difficulty of puzzles throughout a level keeps you interested.
The zany music and unique art style add elements of humor and keeps the gameplay fresh.
While the sound kept things interesting I found it to be annoying and the gameplay was no less without it.
Mr. Pants is a game that satisfies your puzzle fix and once you put it down you’ll soon be coming back for more.
Final Thoughts:
Even though Mr. Pants is like Tetris it is different enough to create its own addiction.
As you work through the levels, the puzzles get more difficult, but with Helpo’s help it doesn’t get overwhelming.
The unique art style and zany theme music (to a certain extent) makes the work of clearing different puzzles fun and makes Mr. Pants all the more harder to put down.
Bottom Line:
A fresh and little dysfunctional addition to the puzzle game family.
A must have for a puzzle gamer who likes it with a twist.
